Dr. Sindu Johnson
Dr. Sindu Johnson is a MSc student in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto. Dr. Johnson's focus is in Scleroderma and associated pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Johnson's project centres on this disease as it relates to a person's defence against germs that are not working properly, ultimately attacking the person's own body. The blood pressure in the lungs of some of these people gets very high. When this happens, they develop breathing problems, heart problems and may die. We know that some patients with high pressures in their lungs have an abnormal gene that puts them at higher risk. The purpose of this project is to see if this abnormal gene is present in patients with Scleroderma who develop high pressure in their lungs. If we find this abnormal gene, we may be able to find these patients and treat them earlier.
During the course of her training, Dr. Johnson has published several papers in Journals of high-impact and has made many presentations and special lectures, particularly in the evaluation of the measurement of specific tools used in Scleroderma clinical trails.
The Society is supporting Dr. Johnson's MSc training through a joint partnership with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis. this funding rans through to June, 2006.
